If applicable, please detail the notification plan for requesting assignment extensions.
Please explain why deadline extensions beyond the number allowed in the syllabus is not a reasonable accommodation.Students must choose 5 classes and post reading reactions at 4p the day prior to class. I have adjusted the deadline for students who indicated an accommodation to be anytime before class, thereby extending the deadline. However, if the reading summary is posted after class (and we already discussed the material), the assignment no longer makes sense. Students do not need to post every class, but they do need to make sure they have organized themselves for five over the course of the quarter (5 in which they are not the "class lead"). Extensions for "class lead" assignments (2 per quarter) also do not quite make sense, as they are group assignments in which students, as a group, present summaries of the readings due in class that day to the rest of the class. A deadline extension would not make sense in this case. The only time a deadline extension would be fine, as long as discussed prior, is for the final paper. My deadline extension policy for the final paper is in the syllabus as "On lateness: -2 points per day unless otherwise discussed with instructor 48hrs prior to deadline or in the case of emergency."
